Laurence Sterne - Author of Tristram Shandy | English Novelist

Portrait of Laurence Sterne

Portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, c. 1760

Laurence Sterne (1713–1768) was an English novelist and Anglican clergyman, best known for his groundbreaking novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759-1767) and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1768). Sterne revolutionized the novel form with his experimental narrative techniques, stream-of-consciousness style, and innovative use of typography and visual elements.

Born in Ireland and educated at Cambridge, Sterne spent much of his career as a country parson in Yorkshire before achieving literary fame. His work influenced countless writers, from Jane Austen to James Joyce, and is considered a precursor to modernist literature. Sterne's wit, humor, and unconventional storytelling methods made him one of the most original voices in 18th-century literature.

At Rambler Press, we celebrate Sterne's innovative spirit by publishing his timeless works in beautifully crafted editions that honor both his literary genius and experimental approach to storytelling.
