Adam Smith (1723–1790), Scottish moral philosopher, lecturer, and key figure in the history of economic thought, is celebrated as the author of The Wealth of Nations (1776), a groundbreaking work often described as the cornerstone of modern economics. Born in Kirkcaldy, he studied at the University of Glasgow and later at Oxford, before holding a professorship in logic and moral philosophy.
